TADA’s Mother’s Day: Kimba the White Lion (1965) US-English Dubbed Pilot

TADA-ima~

From all of us at The Apollo Dub Archive, have a belated Happy Mother’s Day♡

To celebrate this occasion, today’s release is about a wholesome relationship tale between animals and humans – the pilot to NBC’s dub of Kimba the White Lion. It is a classic tale by Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka which has been adored all around the world.

Set in 19xx Africa, white lion Panja gives the wild animals of the jungle a safe haven. However, this angers nearby villagers as their cattle and food are stolen to feed the jungle carnivores. As such, professional hunter Ham Egg is called in to stop the raids – but he has other plans with Panja. His sounds are recorded and used as bait to trap pregnant mate Eliza before he dies – and his mate is put on a ship destined for a zoo. Kimba is born and raised to embody his father’s ideals.

…and then a storm happens, wrecking the ship they’re on. They escape separated as Kimba is saved by fish that teach him how to swim and butterflies that guide him to land. This is where Kimba’s adventure begins.

Of course, based on the picture alone, some have started commenting on it being a rip-off of The Lion King, but that’s where they’re wrong: Kimba came first in the 1960s (the anime – the manga came even earlier in the 50s!). It is true that Disney’s film has certain striking resemblences to it, but in the end both are different animals with similar characteristics and as such neither should really be derided in favour of the other. And given the influence of Walt Disney on Tezuka’s career, wouldn’t he have been more than proud?

Special thanks to Kira for this rare pilot. All he wants to live is a quiet life.
